Making your home more eco-friendly

September 5, 2015

Making your home more eco-friendly, is not always a task that’s top of everyone’s priority list.

Environmentalism may not seem a massive issue for your average household but the tide of opinion turns when people realise that they can save on the cost of utilities if they make their homes more green. This is also very advantageous for landlords. If tenants know that they are going to save on the cost of heating and lighting their home, through better insulation and the link, they will be more prepared to pay the rents being sought.

The aesthetic changes that take place in order for homes to become more eco, are to some considered quite fashionable and a vital requirement for a modern home. For these reasons and more, it is advisable that you look to make your home more environmentally clean.

Here are some of the little and not so little changes that can be made:

Underfloor Heating

Ask any contemporary architect and they will tell you that underfloor heating is all the range. Tenants and buyers alike are encouraged to know that properties come with this feature. Not only is more energy-efficient (as heat rises) it rids homes of radiators, giving rooms more space and an airy feel.

Insulate your loft

If you can do this using recycled materials, then even better. Homeowners should recoup the cost of loft insulation (about £250-£300) in a standard house, within two to three years.

Use water-based paints with natural pigments

Water-based paints that use natural rather than oil pigments are not only more attractive, but much more eco-efficient.

Solar Panels

Consider investing in solar panels. They can be expensive to install, but will make you long-term savings. You can also take the energy generated in your home that you don’t use and sell it on to the National Grid.

Sounds obvious but make sure you switch to energy saving bulbs rather than the standard kind.

Double Glazing

Also goes without saying, insulate your windows. Make sure you prevent heat escaping by going for double rather than single glazing.

By reviewing your home and utilising the opportunities to make your property more energy efficient is highly recommended. It can increase the value of your property and can make it more desirable to tenants and buyers alike.
